Representative organizations and government

[G4-15 / G4-16]

Relations with the government and with pulp and paper industry representative associations play a vital role in International Paper's ability to position itself in regard to policies and regulations applicable to the sector, and to manifest its contribution through public policies that are pertinent to its market activities.

In 2013, IP was a member of the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association (BRACELPA), the Brazilian Forestry Association (Abraf)¹, the Brazilian Technical Association for Pulp and Paper (ABTCP), the Commission for Special Studies on Forestry Management of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), the São Paulo State Industry Center (CIESP), the Mogi Guaçu River Basin Committee (“CBH-Mogi Guaçu”), the Rio Grande River Basin Committee (“CBH-Grande”), the São Paulo State Industry Federation (FIESP),  the Paper Association, the Forestry Research and Studies Institute (IPEF), INMETRO ( through the Technical Forestry Management Subcommittee for the CERFLOR program) and FSC Brasil (through the Standards Development Committee).

Since 2012, IP has also been member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), where it is also part of the Forest Solutions group, responsible for fostering sustainable forestry solutions.

Relations with associations and government are handled by the Institutional and Government Relations Department, which is in turn guided by IP’s Global Public Relations Policy, which seeks a harmonious alignment between the Company’s interests and those of the communities where it operates.

¹ As of April 2014, Bracelpa and Abraf joined forces to create a single association called the Brazilian Tree Industry (IBÁ), of which the Company is a member.
