International Paper is a global leader in the packaging and uncoated paper industry, with operations in North America, Europe, Russia, Latin America, Asia and North Africa. In Brazil it directly employs approximately 2,600 professionals and its integrated production system comprises two pulp and paper mills in the State of São Paulo, in the towns of Mogi Guaçu and Luiz Antônio, and one paper factory in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the municipality of Três Lagoas. The company also has an office in the state capital of São Paulo, where some of the administrative and corporate departments are, as well as the export unit (Ipex). The company also has a distribution center in Porto Alegre.

Aside from the production of uncoated paper and packaging materials, International Paper has a distribution company in North America – Xpedx. Headquartered in Memphis, USA, the company employed about 70,000 people in more than 24 countries in 2012. Net revenue in this same year was more than US$28 billion.

The organization is ranked 105th among the 500 largest companies in the USA. In 2012 it was listed as one of the "Most Admired Companies in the World" for the tenth year in a row, according to a survey by Fortune magazine. It was also considered one of the "Most Ethical Companies in the World" for the 7th consecutive year, by Ethisphere magazine.

Mogi Guaçu Mill (SP)

Operating since the 1960s, this unit was IP Latin America's first to produce printing and writing paper It has the capacity to produce 400,000 tons of pulp and 440,000 tons of uncoated paper and has the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, Cerflor and FSC certifications. There are 1,200 directly employed professionals at the unit, which currently has four paper machines in operation.

Luiz Antônio Mill (SP)

Inaugurated in 1993, the Luiz Antônio mill was included in IP’s portfolio in 2007 and currently directly employs approximately 600 professionals. It has the capacity to produce 410,000 tons of pulp and 360,000 tons of uncoated paper and has the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, Cerflor, FSC, Ecolabel Flower and Colibri certifications. The unit operates with two paper machines.

Três Lagoas Mill (MS)

In operation since 2009, this is the only paper mill built in Brazil in the past 15 years. It has automated finishing lines that can produce up to 140 reams of paper per minute, and employs some of the most advanced technology in the market. The mill has one paper machine with the capacity to produce 230,000 tons of uncoated paper and also has ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001, Cerflor and FSC certifications. Around 210 professionals are directly employed at this unit.

Forestry Unit

International Paper’s forest area spans 102,218 hectares, including 72,000 hectares of eucalyptus plantation earmarked for pulp and paper production. It also maintains 26,357 hectares of conservation areas in the state of São Paulo, where the original characteristics of the native vegetation are preserved, and 3,861 hectares in the process of ecological restoration. The forestry unit has ISO 9001, ISO 14001, Cerflor, FSC and OHSAS 18001 certifications and a Research Center for improving the eucalyptus species and for developing new technologies and more productive and sustainable processes. It directly employs approximately 520 professionals.

In August 2012, this unit adopted a new management model, designed to increase IP's competitiveness. The new plan is based on procedures that make production more efficient, sustainable and integrated. In order to make this possible, the following adjustments were made to the team and to the working structure:

  • Harvesting and Forestry were unified in one sector known as Forestry Operations.
  • The Forestry Excellence department became part of the Forestry Planning department.
  • The projects previously operating under the former Forestry Development department became the responsibility of the Research and Development department.
