Social and Environmental Conscience: Looking after future generations Since its inception, BRMALLS has implemented the best operational and financial practices in its shopping malls. These practices take into account not only the most efficient way to manage and operate, but also the impact of our actions on the communities where we are located and on the environment that surrounds us. Bellow are some of the practices we have adopted in our malls:
Recycling
We are very aware of the impact of garbage on our planet, so recycling is a very important practice in our malls. The trash generated by most of our shopping malls is separated by qualified personnel and we provide distinct trashcans for different kinds of residuals. These trashcans are labeled and located in area corridors and in the food courts. We make an effort to recycle as much as possible. We also ensure appropriate treatment for special kinds of trash such as batteries, fluorescent lamps and oil, reusing the last one to generate energy.
Energy Cogeneration
Besides being a source of revenue, energy cogeneration is also a very ecological solution to reduce the energy needed to run on a shopping mall. We are already cogenerating energy in our biggest energy-consumer mall, NorteShopping, and in 2009 we focused on mapping all possibilities of cogenerating energy in the malls that do not practice it yet. In 2010, one of our goals is to implement cogeneration practices in these malls.
Reutilization of Pluvial Waters
Water is becoming a scarcer resource every day so we must avoid wasting it to help assure its availability in the future. In our shopping malls we take several measures to diminish its use and to reuse pluvial waters. We discourage the waste of water by putting signs in the toilet sinks above bathroom sinks to this end and by educating our tenants in the same way. Also, our mall and garden maintenance personnel reuse rain water in their daily activities.
Social Responsibility
BRMALLS is the largest shopping mall company in Brazil, reaching a large number of consumers. As such, we are very aware of our capacity to influence the communities where we are situated. Every year we lend our common areas to vaccination and disease prevention campaigns and we organize educational workshops for the elderly and children, offering these spaces to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) so they can raise money. In addition, every Christmas season all of our malls make and collect donations, present donation campaigns and distribute these donations to orphanages and NGOs during Christmas.
